The college student Larry Talbot, returning from his family castle in Wales, visit a gipsy camp. Hearing some screams coming from the forest, Larry ran to aid a girl assaulted by a wolf. He kills the beast with his silverheaded-stick but receiving a bite from the animal. The wolf is in reality a lycantrope and Talbot, affected by the bite, transforms himself into a wolf, killing an undertaker and assaulting the girl. Unaware of all, his father will kill him.
Curt Siodmak was the author of celebre poem that appears several times in the film:

"Even to man who is of heart and says his prayers by night may become to wolf when the also wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright".

The Universal re-used the film soundtrack in many other movies.
